On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate passed
S. Res. 299, a resolution recognizing the significance to U.S. Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains of
Diwali, a Festival of Light that has varying historical associations to each religious group. The resolution also calls on the President to issue a proclamation recognizing Diwali. An identical resolution,
H. Res. 245, has been introduced in the House of Representatives. This year, Diwali was celebrated on Nov. 9.
