Murder Suspect's Husband Criticizes Police For Bareheaded Mugshot

In Orland Park, Illinois, police have arrested 26-year old Nour Hadid on charges of beating her 2-year old niece to death over a four day period, according to Friday's Southtown Star. Prosecutors say she has confessed to the crime. However Nour's husband, Alaeddin Hadid, says his wife is innocent and that police have insulted their Muslim religion by releasing a mug shot of his wife without her head covered. Police say that Nour's headscarf was given back to her after the mug shot was taken, but the headscarf was later taken away from her after she made suicide threats.

The right of the people to see those accused and to participate in a trial seem to me to outweigh any right to a head covering for a mugshot.

What "right of the people to see those accused...?"

I don't recall anything in the constitution or in law that supports this rather strange claim.

It strikes me that by publishing mug shots of accused people you actually go quite a long way towards ensuring an unfair trial.

The publication actually seems to be more about prurient interest than ensuring justice.

Tony Konrath is correct, of course, that there exists no public 'right' to see pictures of accused criminals. But newspapers can and do print such names and pictures all the time, with no real purpose except the public humiliation of the accused. I can't see any reason why Muslim women should enjoy more protection from that shame than Christians, Jews, or atheists.
