In Spain, a Catholic member of Parliament, Juan Cotino, provoked some criticism when he insisted on taking his oath of office using a crucifix.
CNA yesterday reported that Cotino placed a crucifix next to a copy of the Constitution and the Bible as he was sworn in on June 9. Father Jose Maria Gil Tamayo, a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, however, praised Cotino, saying that his act was "an eloquent and courageous public gesture."
