Muslim Scholars Criticize Female Shariah Magistrates In Kenya
On Islam reported yesterday that in Kenya, Muslim scholars are critical of a decision by Kenyan Chief Justice Willy Mutunga to create the position of female magistrate in the nation's Islamic courts. There are 17 Kadhis courts in Kenya which deal with matters of personal status such as marriage, divorce and inheritance. Under Kenya's 2010 constitution, Kadhis courts are part of the government court system, subordinate to superior courts. Egypt, Tunisia, Sudan, and Turkey all have female Shariah court magistrates.
