According to
Reuters, in a speech last Wednesday Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir told students that Sudan will move ahead with its plans to adopt an Islamic constitution now that South Sudan with its largely non-Muslim population has gained independence. Bashir said: "Ninety eight percent of the people are Muslims and the new constitution will reflect this. The official religion will be Islam and Islamic law the main source (of the constitution)." The move carries out promises made last December by Bashir. (See
