Berlin Will Not Prosecute Religious Circumcision If Specified Conditions Are Met
Jurist reports that in Germany, state of Berlin Justice minister Thomas Heilmann announced in a press release yesterday (full text in German) that the state will not prosecute anyone performing a circumcision on a young boy so long as (1) the parents consent in writing after being informed of the risks, (2) the parents have a religious motivation for the procedure, and (3) the procedure is performed in accordance with acknowledged medical standards. The statement came in response to an inquiry by a Jewish hospital in Berlin after a court in Cologne ruled in June that parents do not have the right to authorize religious circumcision for their minor sons.
