On Oct. 14, the Supreme Court of Canada heard oral arguments in
Mouvement laïque québécois v. City of Saguenay. In the case (
summary), appellants claim that the opening of Saguenay, Quebec's municipal council meetings with a prayer, and the presence of Christian religious symbols in council chambers, violate the provision of the
Charter of Rights and Freedoms that guarantee freedom of conscience and religion. A
webcast of the full oral arguments is available from the Court's website. The
Globe & Mail reports on the case.
