NJ School Appeals Football Coach Prayer Decision

To the surprise of many observers, the East Brunswick (NJ) Public Schools yesterday filed a notice of appeal with the U.S. Third Circuit in a case involving football coach Marcus Borden. The Asbury Park (NJ) Press reports that the school system asked the appellate court to overturn a lower court's ruling that Borden can participate in student-initiated non-sectarian prayers offered by football team players. Press releases by the school system following the district court decision had suggested that the board was satisfied with the ruling delivered from the bench by U.S. District Judge Dennis Cavanaugh.
