As previously reported, backers of a proposed abortion rights amendment to the Michigan Constitution are appealing to the Michigan Supreme Court the refusal of the Board of State Canvassers to certify the proposal for the ballot. Republicans on the Board created a deadlocked vote, contending that kerning of the text that ran some words together invalidated the petitions that were submitted. The complaint (full text) in Reproductive Freedom for All v. Board of State Canvassers, (MI Sup. Ct., filed 9/1/2022) is now available online, as are some of the amicus briefs filed in the case. Here are links to briefs from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, from seven county Prosecuting Attorneys, and from a coalition of advocacy and religious groups.
